I wanted to create a portrait and add some snow in Photoshop for Christmas, so we set up model Dan Holbeche in a shoot before Christmas with him wearing a winter jumper. I wanted the pose to be cool and the picture to have a touch of fashion to it. The shot was lit with cutting him out and dropping into a background in mind, so wanted some rim lights on his face and clothes to help him blend in to the surrounding natural light in the image
Below is the out of camera picture cut out pre any processing and retouching:
For the background, I actually dug out an old portrait I'd taken of my son during a snowy spell a few years ago and then cloned him out:
Then I combined Dan with the background:
Next I worked on the retouching:
Once done I needed to cool him down to help blend in with th background and appear to be cold:
Bring the snow into the image in Photoshop was the fun part. I built this up slowly to add depth and focussed on smaller snow in his hair and beard. Once done, I amped up the detail in the entire image more:
Finally I felt the whole image still looked too warm so I cooled it down even further with some desaturation, added some clarity and more contrast and a tiny bit of vignette for the finished image:
I hope you like it. If you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment or send me an [email protected]
